Finland Scholarship 2023 for international students

Planning a budget for your time in Finland is an important part of preparing for the journey ahead. Universities offer a range of options for scholarships both for bachelor’s and master’s level international students. Funding options also exist for doctoral level.

FINLAND SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MASTER’S DEGREE STUDENTS

The Finland Scholarship offers international students from outside the EU/EEA help in funding university education in Finland, ensuring they get the best support for making most of their studies, nurturing their talents and launching successful careers after graduation.

The scholarships are aimed at gifted non-EU/EEA students who are liable to tuition fees and apply for international master’s programmes at the Finnish universities listed below.

The scholarship covers a first-year tuition fee and a relocation grant of 5000€ as a minimum. Many universities offer further scholarship options for the second year of master’s studies, please see the links for the participating institutions below.

You can apply for the scholarship from the university when you apply for admission. Please check the application procedure, deadlines and detailed requirements directly from the university.

FINLAND DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

As part of the Finland Scholarship programme, Finland Fellowships is a funding option for non-EU/EEA students and researchers admitted to start their Doctoral studies at one of Finnish research and arts universities.

The Finland Fellowship contributes to the salary paid by your Finnish university and also includes a 2000€ arrival grant. Check the Finland Fellowship details with your Finnish university – see list above.

Finland Scholarships are available from 2022 to 2024. The scholarships are funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

BACHELOR’S AND MASTER’S SCHOLARSHIPS

Finnish higher education institutions offer a range of scholarship options for those non-EU/EEA students who are required to pay tuition fees (see section Fees and costs).

Each university/university of applied sciences (UAS) has its own scholarship system. You usually apply for the scholarship from the university at the same time when you apply for admission.

If you are applying to Master’s programmes at universities, also check out the Finland Scholarships!

Your first step would be to search for the degree programme you’d be interested in applying to. Then, you can check the scholarship options and procedures with the university/UAS offering that programme.

Find out about the available options at Studyinfo.fi or on the universities’ own admissions info pages, and then contact the university/UAS you are interested in for further advice.

DOCTORAL FUNDING

On doctoral level, no tuition fees are charged, but you will need to cover your living expenses. When you apply for doctoral admission, you can ask the Finnish university department for advice on research funding options. The university departments may have paid doctoral research positions available, or doctoral funding schemes of their own. They can usually also best direct you to potential grant-awarding foundations in your field of scientific research.

EDUFI FELLOWSHIPS

The national EDUFI Fellowship scholarship programme is available for doctoral level studies and research in Finland.

Note that you can not independently apply for the EDUFI Fellowship – the “applicant” in this scholarship programme is your Finnish university department. So, in order to be eligible for the EDUFI Fellowship, you must first successfully apply for doctoral admission.

If you have questions regarding the EDUFI Fellowship itself, please contact the scholarships admins directly. You can find their contact details on the above EDUFI Fellowship web page.

Note that EDUFI Fellwships are not full degree scholarships but “start-up grants” awarded for a maximum of 12 months. After the EDUFI scholarship period the student/researcher will need to find other sources of funding.
